When Do Airbags Expire?

If you’re anything like me, especially if your car is getting older, you’ve probably questioned if your airbag will truly deploy if or when it is necessary.

So, can airbags be repaired, do they require maintenance, and do they have an expiration date?

Will It or Won’t It Expire?

Dual airbags were made required in new cars, including light vehicles, in the late 1990s, so there’s a strong possibility yours has at least 2 airbags.

You’ll be glad to know that the airbag used in current vehicles has no expiration date and will endure the entire lifespan of the car.

Some of the original airbags manufactured in the 1970s and 1990s could need to be inspected or replaced every 10 to 15 years.

The airbags have, however, properly deployed in earlier vehicles that have undergone crash simulation testing.

The airbags in some older automobiles initially had an expiration date, but the makers have recently decided that the airbags will likely last the whole lifespan of the vehicle.

Airbag Lgniters’ Enduring Power

The life of an airbag now equals the life of the car because it has been discovered that the sort of seal used to house the igniter is more durable than initially anticipated.

Initially, there were two different kinds of airbag igniters produced: one was comprised of glass and metal and the other of plastic and metal.

Plastic squibs were less durable than glass, and there was also a greater danger of moisture getting into the seal, which may cause the parts to corrode and reduce the igniter’s effectiveness.

All igniter seals today are made of glass and metal.

Keep an Eye on Your Airbags

The airbag has shown to be a dependable gadget that doesn’t need any maintenance or repair.

This is good news because airbags are now standard equipment on all new cars, and some can even have multiple types installed.

Checking the airbag light on your instrument panel on a regular basis is advised for maintaining the airbags in your car.

The airbag symbol should illuminate and then turn off when the ignition is turned on in the car.

You should get your airbags checked by a competent mechanic if the symbol does not illuminate at all or the airbag light is on for a prolonged period of time.

You can rest easy knowing that auto manufacturers are confident in the effectiveness and durability of airbags given their more than 25-year experience.
